Community Against Crime – Front Page News!

I was so excited to see that our Community Against Crime event was on the front page of South Kansas City’s newspaper, The Advocate!

As a reminder, the pancake breakfast is all-you-can-eat; $7 for adults, $5 for kids. PTA members get $1 discount off each ticket they purchase today, plus discounts on every Dobbs PTA event throughout the school year.

The raffle prizes will be quite fun, so far we have gift certificates for a massage, kickboxing, Best Buy, U.S. Toy, and some toys and games for kids. Don’t forget to buy a raffle ticket!

We’ve had a huge response already from the community about this event. We can’t wait to see the turnout on Saturday.

See you guys over pancakes!

Community Against Crime – September 19 – SKC

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sept. 11, 2009

FIRST-EVER ‘COMMUNITY AGAINST CRIME’ EVENT SEPTEMBER 19

Members of the Dobbs Elementary PTA are hosting a ‘Community Against Crime’ pancake breakfast Saturday, September 19 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the school, 9400 Eastern Ave. Former city councilman and south Kansas City resident Alvin Brooks, a long-time community activist and member of the Ad Hoc Group Against Crime, will be the guest speaker. Residents of the Hickman Mills community and south Kansas City are invited to discuss this important issue with Brooks, Major Cheryl Rose of the Kansas City Police Department South Patrol Division and administrators from the Hickman Mills C-1 School District.

“Upon hearing many concerned members in the community mention a visible rise in crime, Dobbs PTA decided to turn a school fundraiser into a community event with the goal of providing useful information and resources to help the community arm themselves against crime,” said Patty Jo Djennelbaroud, vice-president of Dobbs PTA. “We (Dobbs PTA) believe this event will help the community pull together and empower its citizens to take back south Kansas City.”

There will be a raffle for prizes and an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast will be served. Breakfast is $7 for adults and $5 for children. Proceeds from the breakfast will help pay for student field trips during the school year.

Dobbs PTA is dedicated to promoting parent involvement, teacher communication and community participation to assist scholars in achieving academic excellence. Their motto is “Uniting Community & Empowering Children.” By providing relevant resources for families and the south Kansas City community through speakers, programs and events, the Dobbs PTA strives to promote academic success, self-worth, character strength and a sense of community in every student.

Garage Sale Success

We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day to have our school garage sale last Saturday. The nice, cool morning got off to a good start with a huge line of tables full of items for sale coupled with the smiling faces of our volunteers. Take a few steps back before that moment to the planning that happened all through the summer and the hard work of all of our volunteers, behind the scenes and on site at the school. I can’t express how inspiring it was to see our community pull together for a good cause.

After it was all said and done our leftovers were donated to a local charity and our bank account received a happy deposit.

Tremendous thanks to everyone that donated, volunteered, and shopped. Our first event for this school year was a success!

Great Start to a New Year!

Yesterday we held our first PTA meeting of the year. We had an awesome attendance – some new parent faces and some loyal ones that we loved seeing again.

Dr. Watson gave a great summary for the start of the year at Dobbs. He definitely has his plate full. He made a personal request to see an increase in parent involvement at the school.

Our PTA Board Members introduced themselves and individually discussed what we’re doing this year, what it means to be a member, and how volunteering can make a big difference for the achievement of our students.

We are very pleased with our new child watch program – in partnership with Hickman Mills A+ program. Eager minded and well-trained young adults from Hickman watched our very large group of children so the parents could enjoy the meeting. I can’t stress how excited we are to be a part of helping these young ones reach their community service goals for graduation.

We had a huge response to our appeal for membership. As I entered their information into the database I found myself getting giddy to have such a great base of parents willing to devote time and energy into our kids at Dobbs. Love them!

Not to be overlooked is our teacher representation. Dr. Watson and several members of his staff also attended and showed their support. They work hard and have a long day, so we truly appreciate them taking more time out for our kids.

Thanks to all the parents that came out with such a short notice. I was truly wow’d by the crowd that came.

I have to say I love our new board member team. They showed up after a long day at work, organized the meeting, spoke on important topics, and kept their energy going. A lot of hard work goes into the meetings alone – so thanks to all our board members that worked so hard.

Don’t forget – tomorrow night is Back to School Night at the school. Come by, meet the teacher and staff, learn more about the school, and definitely sign up to be a PTA member!

2009-2010 School Year!

Welcome to the 2009-2010 School Year! We are so excited that school is underway. I love the sight of new backpacks, fresh haircuts, and eager minds traipsing into the school building.

Last Tuesday night the School District had their annual Back To School Rally & Parade. For those of you that missed it – they had one of the largest attendance in years. It was thrilling to see parents and families showing their support and involvement from the start of the year. There were some exciting announcements made – several organizations in the community raised school supplies that will be distributed throughout the district, a number of our schools passed Missouri’s AYP with flying colors, and we were informed of a school adoption program supported by local churches in our community.

Both PTA and Dobbs have exciting things in store for this year. We will continue working hard to bring a sense of community back to our area, increase parental involvement, and further the education level of our scholars.

I encourage you to subscribe to our blog – it is our goal to update it several times a week. This will help you stay informed of events, volunteer needs, school and district information, as well as Kansas City news and activities for families.

Here’s to a GREAT 2009-2010 school year.
